Marina Facility Breakwaters
If you can get the required permits and have deep pockets, you can install a rock and rubble type permanent breakwater. These systems are costly (particularly if part or all the route is in deeper water). They, by their nature, are built up from the lake bottom and disturb the natural water circulation patterns and fish or other marine life. Due to the expense involved, they do not lend themselves to any form of modification after installation. You can buy one of the many floating concrete pontoon systems. These systems typically double as floating docks. They attenuate waves much like rigid concrete, rock, sheet pile or composite timber type bulkheads. They tend to “bounce” the waves back into the lake or other body of water. These bounced waves commonly add to the height of the normal waves and can give a complex wave pattern with larger waves. The extreme waves often reported by ships on the high seas are extreme examples of these phenomena. Consider instead the many advantages that our lightweight and inexpensive system offers. Installation is much easier and less expensive, and modification or adjustment is not difficult. Also, due to the lightweight floating nature of the barrier, the system tends to absorb the force of the waves rather than bouncing it back to cause other problems. Also, since the floating breakwater does not extend to the bottom surface, it does not disrupt water circulation patterns or marine life.
